Personal Inventory

"How: Document the things that people identity as important to them as a way of cataloging evidence of their lifestyle.

Why: This method is useful for revealing people’s activities, perceptions, and values as well as patterns among them.

For a project to design a handheld electronic device, the IDEO team asked people to show and describe the personal objects they handle and encounter every day."

This week I did a "personal Inventory" survey and collected some photos from some artists and designers. I need them to document the things that they identify important for them as an artist or designer. This is useful for revealing my audience ’s activities, perceptions and values, and reflect what kind of people they are, what their egos are.

When I talked to others about this project before, they said that some people may not understand what ego is. I may need to do something to explain it, so I will also use the collected photos as material. I think that by showing everyone's important things, people will know more clearly what I mean by "ego". I will add some text on these photos to show my audiences.

When organizing these photos, I found that this is also some very good data, because I found that some important items are the same for different artists and designers. For example, three of them use cups as their important items, and I will consider whether to add the item "cup" to my "box".

As I mentioned before in Methods workflow, personal inventory is an important method in my project, because it makes my whole project more clearly reflect the existence of ego. This also reflects that even the personalized objects will have some similarities with others, which is also a reflection of the fusion of individual and collective. I will make good use of the pictures information that these artists and designers gave me, because this is not only a personal inventory survey, but also the guide material of my outcome.
