You research question (first slide)
My research question is the connection between ego and the world, and my audiences are artists and designers. These come from my motivation and preliminary research.
Where you at right now.
As a link between the define stage and the development stage, I designed a questionnaire to better understand my audiences. In the questionnaire, I introduced the background and the format of the project so that they can understand my theme more easily. The most important information I got in this questionnaire is that people think that personal memories can best reflect who they are. In other words, what‘s their ego. In the last item of this questionnaire, I also collected some important materials for this project. That is personal inventory. These personal items are all from artists and designers, I need them to document the things that they identify important for them as an artist or designer. This is useful for revealing my audience ’s activities, perceptions and values, and reflect what kind of people they are, what their egos are. These are also very important materials for my next stage.
Your most recent visual experiments
Next I started shooting outdoors. This time I used a professional camera, and I invited my photographer friends to help me in the suburbs. The purpose of this shooting is to take some mottled marks and use it as a picture filter. I will superimpose these mottled traces on the pictures I originally took, creating a sense of old, mottled, mixed, and faded memory. In order to create a personal Feeling of memories, I hope to shoot some Scratches, rust, damage, trace, Water stains, Crease.
After the shooting, I started the first visual experiment. As I found in the previous questionnaire, a person's memory is the best reflection of a person's ego. And people's memories are made up of a bunch of frames, so I thought of photos as a medium. I want to use distorted pictures, dark colors, mottled traces to represent the memory, because memory is gradually disappearing.
I tried an old photo to do the experiment. I wanted to think about the experiment and choose the best visual effect. I choose to use my own pictures from a few months in London. I chose these photos for some reasons. First of all, my audience is designer and artist, and I am one of them. Second, because my subject is ego, the ego I know best is my own. Last, it will allow me to have as much raw material as possible. That’s why I use my own photos.
In the first experiment, I superimposed different filters on the pictures. These filters were made in photoshop by myself. After I shared these pictures in Rose’s group, Rose said that it created some sense of memories, and hoped that I would complete other pictures next week.Next, I started the second experiment to create more "memory" on more types of photos. Then I started the image processing. Here are some randomly selected photos that I have processed. More photos can be viewed in the workflow. Now I am making a memory box. But when I searched the box on the design website, it did not show many related works. I want to put something like this with some personal items in the box. If you know any good works, please recommend it to me.
I started the design of the box last week.
This is the feeling I want to make. However, I chose four textures, not sure which one to use. I did a small questionnaire in ins, hoping to hear more people's opinions.
I want to put the materials I mentioned earlier on the top layer, including personal inventory cards, text, illustrations, tags, etc.
The next four layers place my memories of four months in London. Because in these four months, I completely separated from my original group and had a relationship with the new collective. These photos are the evidence of my re-exploration of individual and collective relations.
This is a sketch of the box.
This week I will make it and test it. If it is not successful, I will do it again.
reflection on the presentation
This presentation is a summary of my current work. This project is gradually coming to an end. A large period of time has passed in the development stage. And I realized that I must now speed up the production and complete the task as soon as possible. I need to reflect on my work and listen to feedback from others. In the project of making ppt, I outlined my current work and how to proceed in the next stage. This is not to retell the project for myself, but to explain it to more people to see if there are different voices. So for this presentation, I tried my best to express clearly and in detail the visual experiment I made at this stage.
reflection on the feedback
Today's presentation I summarized the recent work, I hope to get some feedback. Because I saw that the request of this presentation is directly where I am at now rather than introducing my project journey. So I directly introduced the box I was working on, but did not introduce why I made it. This may confuse people who have not been in contact with my project recently. Why should I make a box? In fact, I described in detail in these workflow:
https://workflow.arts.ac.uk/research-13-02-2020
https://workflow.arts.ac.uk/r-o-c-3
I received some feedback. For example, Laura said that the elements I use are very personal, and she wants me to improve my expression. I may further explain the connection between the question I researched and my outcome. Others asked if I wanted to express that the artist uses memory to create? I think she understands it right. This understanding comes from my original motivation.
I am very happy to hear different feedbacks. These are very helpful for my next improvement.
