project theme

Explore the relationship between art and politics through the relationship between the Ego(individual) and the world(collective).

motivation

I used to be in my little world, focused only on things I was interested in. But the recent outbreak of the coronavirus in our country brought me back to a bleak reality. All over my Chinese social media, I've been inundated with news of coronavirus patients. The death toll is reported every day, not as a statistic but as part of a family. Even in a few short weeks, some people's whole families have passed away. And that's largely because of the government's cover-ups and indecisiveness.
It was like a trigger that had a huge impact on me and forced me to face the harsh reality. I used to think we artists and designers should pay attention to art and design, but now I think we should also talk about politics, history, morality and everything we have to do with each other, which is to know the social structure clearly, not to be vague. Then we can get a new level of cognition out of these things that would otherwise be just doing superficial art and design on a vague base.
So my future position in design is not to focus on myself but to talk about the connection between the ego(individual) and the world(collective) based on the era and society.

knowledge/skills/experience do you bring to this project:

  • utilize valuable experience from the last two projects to practice critical reflection writing and time management in this project.
  • communicate more with the audience, creating conversations, getting feedback, ruminating and evolving.
  • review the aesthetic theories that have influenced me and think critically about them
  • show some of my photography skills in this project.

hoping to learn:

  • learn deeper about critical design
  • explain clearly my position as a designer at this stage
  • add social authenticity on the basis of individuality
  • critically illustrate the relationship between art and politics by discussing the relationship between individuals and collectives
  • communicate with audience more clearly and effectively

historical

Show us the key historical ideas/practitioners that relate to your project.

1.The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction

This is Benjamin's most widely quoted article, and it is good material for studying the relationship between art and politics.

Benjamin said he wrote the essay to describe a theory that had been used to "shape the revolutionary demands of art and politics." The development of art will be based on political practice in the era of mechanical reproduction in which the value of traditional and religious rituals recedes.

2.Fascism: Aestheticisation of politics

The author thinks that fascism is an aesthetic political behavior, and then discusses the deep relationship between individual and collective. Military uniforms in war represent the highest goal, the projection of all desires. The bodies under the uniforms are less important than the uniforms themselves. This collectivism is hypocritical and dead, the state is just a noun supported by the ruling class. In a quadrilateral of nature and nation, war is the diagonal. This leads to the most personal suffering through theocratic obedience. I think this is China‘s inevitable status quo in the coronavirus period. That's why I'm talking about the relationship between the individual and the collective.

contemporary context

Show us designers/artists/writers who are working with a similar subject

1.Lexie Liu (2020) Manta

This is an album of music released in 2020, which discusses the infinite consciousness of human. Lexie believes in Multiverse that all the self-consciousness generated in the process of creation is really happened, just in other space and time. In the mind of the creator,Lexie, she has gone through the process of breaking and rebuilding herself."Ego" is a constant theme in her artwork.

In my past projects, I have tried many similar themes, exploring how the individual can separate from the collective, exploring how the individual can not be submerged by mass culture. But this time I made a change, I no longer see the individual and the collective as two incompatible concepts, they are no longer opposites, I want to explore the role of the individual in the collective. We come from the collective, and we can never leave the collective. As I mentioned in Motivation, art is not an ethereal thing, it has its base, and it is a bottom-up product rather than a top-down one. I hope to reflect these differences in this project.

2.Luc Besson (2014) Lucy

It's a movie about ego(self) consciousness. This movie is a good illustration of the point I want to make, which is how the Ego connect with the World. In the movie, Lucy's super consciousness turns into a USB flash drive and is left in the world forever, which has a profound and ultimate connotation. In my opinion, this is a kind of bottom-up art, except that her audience is a professor of brain research, who has witnessed her historic moment of developing her brain's potential to 100%. In the end she was perfectly connected to the world and told everyone: I am everywhere.

theoretical context

Tell us about theory that relates to your project.

Speculative and Critical Design (SCD) is very inspiring and instructive. It provides young designers with a practical design theory and methodology that leads us to a preferable future, encourages us to think critically about social issues and draws the attention of the audience.
SCD is based on political and social change over the past four decades, to allow novel approach, design practice needs restructuring. Its aesthetics refer to the science fiction of 1960s pop culture. Inspired by visions of space travel and radical, futuristic utopias. One interesting concept of SCD is social dreaming. It leads young designers to encourage social dreaming and debate by designing, question what will happen in the future innovation.

I particularly like Dunne & Raby's understanding of SCD. This is a very valuable quality in the design, and it is also what I will follow in my future design practice. I will reflect on my design from these aspects and reflect on myself. I will challenge what is given by the society, arouse the audience's thinking on social issues through communication with them, and encourage public debate.
Coming back to my SIP project, my aim is to be to encourage people to debate a new concept. Therefore, the Morden Design process proposed in SCD is very useful to me. Our designers need to complete "pre-design" and "post-design", that is, research (determine the needs) and activities (audience testing and evaluate the result). While traditional design only has intermediate process, omitting "pre" and "post".

To develop and evaluate my project, I will use SCD practice:
Define a context for debate
Ideate and find problems, and create a scenario
Materialize the scene to provoke an audience

methodology

A methodology is a critical design attitude that informs the methods you choose.

Your methodology is often based on your values and assumptions as a designer.

Remember methods and mindsets / position?

  • How is this project positioned in the field of design practice? Is this project done with an expert or participatory mindset? Or is it somewhere in the middle?
  • In the middle. Because in this project, I will conduct more research on the theory context, which is rare in my previous projects. Moreover, I will communicate with the direct or indirect audience for many times to get some feedback. So my position is in the middle.
  • Is it human-centered? Critical? Participatory? User-centred?
  • Crucial. Due to My aim is to be to encourage people to debate a new concept, and Speculative and Critical Design (SCD)advocates is a kind of critical thinking. This will be very helpful for my project.
  • Is is research-led or design led?
  • Research-led. This is a change for me, because I have learned "pre-design" (research) and "post-design" (Activities) in SCD, and I will make corresponding adjustments to my work process.
  • Will you use a design thinking approach? What is that?
  • Critical Design."1.Define a context for debate/2.Ideate and find problems, and create a scenario/3.Materialize the scene to provoke an audience"
  • How you will record what you do and keep track of what you have done?
  • reflective journal in Workflow and  Flow Analysis
This helps me to analyze bottlenecks and opportunities, and make timely adjustments and improvements.

Tell us how you plan to do your project

Which methods will you use to explore your question?

  • What process(es) of research and experimentation will you use?

I will use IDEO methods as my processes of research and experimentation。
  • Why are these the right methods?

    Affinity Diagram
This is a useful way to identify connections between issues and reveal innovation opportunities. I know that it is difficult to explain a new concept to people, so I can explain it with approximate simple concepts.

    Extreme Users Interview
This requires me to contact the people who‘s familiar or no unfamiliar with the theme. These individuals are often able to highlight key issues of the design problem and provide insights for design improvements.

    Survey&Quastionnaires
I need to set some questions by myself and do a guided survey. This is the key to gathering people's thoughts.

    Personal Inventory
This is a very important step, through the document of everyone's important items, I can see the focus of this person's life. I'm going to focus on observing this step and finding similarities between the different egos to see how interesting the outcome can be.

    Flow Analysis
This helps me to analyze bottlenecks and opportunities, and make timely adjustments and improvements.

    Narration
This encourages the audience to express themselves aloud, which enables me to understand the motivation, concepts and viewpoints of different egos.

    Collage
This allows people to choose their own images and arrange them and interpret them. This gives me an idea of how well the audience understands the concept and helps them understand complex theme. My theme is very suitable for the method of collage.

  • How you will record what you do and keep track of what you have done?

Document every progress in workflow and draw Flow Analysis
  • How will you evaluate the success of these methods?

One of my aims is to make the audience understand clearly and communicate effectively. So I will evaluate the success of these methods based on the understanding of the audience.
