reflection
As shown in the video, this box takes two days to complete. On the first day, the clay needs to be attached to the box and sculpted. The next day, after the clay being dried it can be colored.
I put reflective cellophane on the surface of the box as a base, and then used tools to carve the clay. I don't want to wrap the entire box with clay, because the reflective material inside needs to be exposed. When there is light, it will flash, like the light from the box. When people approached, they could also see themselves reflected, and the ego of each person interspersed with each other.
When sculpting, I try to make the shape of each clay different, so as to express the complexity and mixing of ego. I think in the modular workshop, we use different physical tools to make different textures. So in some places, I not only used tools but also directly used my hands to make the texture of the box more rich and full.
When painting, I used black acrylic paint and silver gloss oil. There was also a glitter gel on the surface. This is done to create a mixed texture. Because our memory is sticky, mixed and unrecognizable.
Many of my previous jobs were made on computers. This time making the box made me discover the joy of making handicrafts. Physical practice can also produce very rich changes, and it allows me to touch the materials and personally shape them into a work. I will try some more physical works in the future, it makes me feel very intrigued.
